Terrazzo has a long history. It has been used for hundreds of years to create elegant floors, staircases, and more. Its name comes from the fact that it was used to finish the floors of terraces in Venetian construction. Terrazzo made its way to North America after gaining popularity in European construction. Today, Terrazzo is utilized by architects and designers widely since it is easily customizable and cost effective. It’s unlimited color palette and pattern possibilities keep terrazzo growing in popularity in this industry.
Durability & Strength
Terrazzo is known for being one of the strongest materials you can use, making it possible for it to withstand heavy traffic for decades. Terrazzo is a hard, durable, impact-resistant, and abrasion-resistant surface suitable for high pedestrian traffic. Epoxy terrazzo has a compressive strength of 10,000 psi; cementitious terrazzo’s compressive strength is generally 4,500 psi.
Environmentally Friendly
Terrazzo is a green product that incorporates recycled materials and contains zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Maintenance requires no harsh chemicals, you can use earth-friendly products, and because of its composition it is antimicrobial.
Design Capabilities
Over the years terrazzo has advanced since its initial use. With the technology of today, epoxy terrazzo is utilized to create customized designs. Any design, pattern, logo, or color choice is possible. Designers and architects have the freedom and flexibility when working with terrazzo.
Low-Maintenance
When dealing with dirt and debris from normal foot traffic, the floor should be swept, or dry dust mopped regularly. Liquid spills can be simply wiped up. Terrazzo flooring can be cleaned with a broom, and then damp-mopped with plain water. A neutral cleaning solution can be used to clean anything sticky from the floor. Using an acidic or alkaline solution on the floor can eventually dull the shine of the terrazzo. Bleach will immediately dull the shine and should likewise never be used.
Numerous buildings have terrazzo installed to enhance their design and beauty. Aside from its elegance the benefits of terrazzo make it an appealing material to use. There is no question why contractors, architects, designers and building owners are choosing to use terrazzo.
